But this specific coin is thought to be what is known as a “hobo coin,” not a piece of money from another planet.

Between 1913 and 1980, it is estimated that approximately 200,000 classic hobo coins featuring individually made works of art by the homeless were produced.

 
 
 

They were frequently created by using knives or other tools to modify pre-existing coins.
