WatchTime New York 2023 returns to Gotham Hall in Manhattan from October 20 to 22, offering watch enthusiasts a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of watchmaking excellence. This three-day event promises engaging brand presentations, insightful industry discussions and hands-on experiences with some of the world’s most exceptional watches. Among the esteemed watchmakers attending this year, Greubel Forsey stands out with its latest creation: the Double Balancier Convexe in carbon.
Greubel Forsey has been a relentless force in the world of high-end watchmaking since its founding in 2004. Nestled in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Atelier Manufacturing has built a reputation of exceptional innovation, craftsmanship and commitment to invention, resulting in watches that are celebrated for their distinct place in the world of haute horology.
In August 2023, Greubel Forsey presented its latest product – the Double Balancer Convexe in carbon. This new masterpiece not only demonstrates the brand’s dedication to innovation but also marks the brand’s first foray into making watches from carbon. With a diameter reduced by 42.5mm compared to previous versions of the Double Balancer, this unexpected watch represents a bold combination of structural complexity and the use of highly technical materials.
As its name suggests, carbon fiber takes center stage in the new model, enhancing both the lightness and durability of the design. The model’s distinct convex case—a favorite among fans of the brand—benefits from the introduction of this material, and its development was no small feat. Greubel Forsey’s innovative process subjects carbon shells to eight times more pressure than industry standards, creating a material that is denser yet equally light. The carbon case then serves as a canvas for the intricate, hand-finished watch details, including satin engraving, matte and emboss. These elements complement the natural beauty of carbon fiber, creating a harmonious blend of form and function throughout the design.
The Double Balancier Convexe is being offered to collectors in two distinct versions, each with its own character. The first has an iridescent green finish, incorporating various shades of blue on the main bridge, power reserve display, mainplate and hour ring. This version comes with a matching rubber strap, giving it a fresh and modern feel.
The second version uses black as the main color, exuding elegance and simplicity. The carbon fiber weave provides a clean, modern look, helping the hand-finished movement stand out. Mirror polish, sharp inner corners, straight and rounded surfaces, and luminescent needle tips elevate both versions.
Tucked inside the carbon fiber watch is Greubel Forsey’s sixth fundamental invention. The movement has two balance wheels inclined at 30° and linked by a constant spherical differential visible between 6 and 7 o’clock. This functional arrangement minimizes errors and meets the brand’s stringent performance, accuracy and reliability standards.
The Greubel Forsey Double Balancier Convexe in carbon is available as a limited edition, with only 22 pieces produced of each variation, making this a rare and exclusive addition to any watch collection .
